Dental Implants Q & A

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are alternatives to bridges and dentures, used to replace teeth lost to decay, disease or trauma. Implants have three primary parts: A metal post that's implanted into the jawbone to act as a kind of root, the prosthetic tooth or crown that replaces your natural tooth, and a special piece called an abutment that securely connects the post and the crown.

How is the implant procedure performed?

Dental Implants usually take three visits for placement. This appointment will be scheduled with our trusted Oral Surgeon next door. At your first appointment, the titanium post will be implanted into your jaw bone. If you don't have enough jawbone to support the implant, a bone graft can be performed at the same time to augment your bone. The post is given time to fuse with the jawbone – usually several weeks. Then your second visit will be scheduled. At that appointment, the abutment will be attached and an impression will be made and sent to the lab so your crown can be made. At the third appointment, the crown will be securely attached and buffed so it feels comfortable and natural.

Will insurance cover the cost of dental implants?

That depends on your insurance company and the plan coverage you have, but often, the cost of implants is not covered or may be only partially covered. In those instances, we can help you arrange a payment plan or find financing that can help you fit the cost of your implants into your budget.

Are dental implants hard to care for?

No, dental implants are cared for using the same techniques you use to care for your natural teeth – regular brushing and flossing to keep the gums around the implants free of disease, and routine dental visits to ensure the implant is in good shape.
